A vote to change the start of the fishing period.

A proposal to change the start of the fishing period was recently circulated following discussion and general support at Industry meetings in 2012 and 2013.

The intent was to avoid breaking the winter fishing run with another TAC starting on 1 July each year, particularly to encourage fishing in northern areas, spreading the fishing effort as encouraged by the TAC Committee, and enabling a higher TAC.

DPI will do nothing and make no change to the fishing period unless one specific change is supported by a clear majority of shareholders.

The Abalone Council of NSW will now arrange a vote by Shareholders about changing the start of the fishing period to 1 January each year, and report results to DPI.  It is hoped the outcome will be implemented in the upcoming Fishing Period.
